What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people were free, effectively putting an end to slavery in the last Confederate state. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had declared all enslaved people in Confederate states to be free as of January 1, 1863. Juneteenth has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s and has become an increasingly recognized holiday in recent years.
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, officially making June 19 a federal holiday and giving national recognition to a day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Why is it important to celebrate Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a day of reflection and celebration, as it helps to tell the story of African American resilience and perseverance throughout history. It is an important reminder of the importance of freedom and equality for all people. Juneteenth serves as an opportunity to commemorate the struggles, victories, and contributions of African Americans past and present, while recognizing the power of collective action to bring about social change. It is a day for everyone to come together in celebration of freedom, justice and equality for all.
