Meet the Creator
Hi…I’m Miranda. I created this platform to elevate Black Owned businesses, uplift Black voices, tell Black stories, and celebrate Black culture here in Los Angeles. Here’s a look into my why and how Black Owned in LA came about.
To say that the unjust killings, the racism, the police brutality, the civil unrest, and the conflict that gripped out nation during the summer of 2020 were heartbreaking would be a gross understatement. That pivotal moment…that pivotal MOVEMENT forced me to process and work through my own emotions, as I tried to understand why that time was so traumatic and why that time was different.
As I worked through the tears (so many tears), the rage, the anger and the sadness…I asked myself, “what am I really doing to help”. Through the self reflection, I realized that I had been in self preservation mode for many years prior to George Floyd's murder — since Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott and Sandra Bland.
Watching small Black children protest across this country, with their tiny Black fists in the air and the conviction in their stride that told me they truly understood what was happening brought me to my knees. Was I standing with them? Was I fighting for them? Was I making a better world for them and for my future little ones? I’ve voted, petitioned, made calls, written letters, made financial contributions, and I’ve been vocal on social media for years. But all of that didn’t feel like it was enough...because the simple truth is that it wasn't. I knew I could do more.
To be frank, I struggled with figuring out how I could personally make a real impact, and how I could best serve in a way that was not only authentic, but in a way that would be sustainable for many years to come. @blackownedinla is where I landed. Marketing is what I know, what I’m known for, and is one of the things that I do best.
With every fiber of my being, and with an abundance of God’s grace…I will continue to do this work with the careful attention, integrity, professionalism, exceptional standard, and LOVE that our Black owned businesses and communities deserve. Black Owned in LA is not a hobby, nor will I ever treat it (or you) as such.
This is OUR platform, created with the sole intention of elevating Black businesses, uplifting Black voices, and celebrating Black culture here in Los Angeles. What started as on IG profile highlighting Black businesses has growing into a community of people who are just as passionate about this mission and a growing Online Directory of local Black Owned Businesses -- and we're just getting started, y'all!
